Gặp cô bé sinh viên ở hành lang đại học
Rạng rỡ môi cười, nhân diện đài trang
Hôm nay vinh quy, sĩ tử nhận bảng vàng
Kẻ Bác sĩ, người Ph.D. đông vô số kể
Trong đám tân khoa… ô kìa cô bé
Mới vừa đây “Anh, Chú” loạn cào cào
Cô bé đi qua cúi đầu chào Chú
Hắn giật mình quay lại đàng sau
Chỉ có mình mình nào có ai đâu
Hắn không biết làm sao
Để cô nhỏ cất đi tiếng Chú
Nheo con mắt nhìn cô ta tự nhủ
Chắc trên mặt mình
Đã xuất hiện mấy đường nhăn
Hắn mỉm cười
Nhưng lòng bỗng băn khoăn
Thương tiếc quá tiếng “chào anh” dịu ngọt
Mà cô bé đâu có còn non nớt
Trên bảng vàng đề Tiến Sĩ chứ ít sao
Cô nhỏ là ai
Cô đến tự phương nào
Mà vóc dáng đông phương đầy huyền thoại
Muốn mở lời khen nhưng lòng e ngại
Chợt trong lòng nghĩ tới… “Chú Đạt” xưa (*)
Nhìn trời mây trắng lưa thưa
Chú thì Chú nhưng chắc chưa… hết thời 🙂

Sudden Raise in Form of Address

I met a young college girl at the university hall
On her pretty face, her lips formed a dazzling smile.
Today’s a glorious day where graduates receive their degrees
Several future doctors, and many have Ph.Ds
In the new elite group, there’s that young girl
She have been wildly switching between addressing others
from “elder friend/brother (anh) to the hateful word uncle”.*
The girl, when walking by him, bowed her head and said “Hi, Uncle”. (Hi Chú)*
He was startled, and turned around to see if there’s any other.
But there was only him and no one else.
He really want to know how
to make the young girl put away the word “Uncle”
Squinting his eyes, he looked at her, thinking to himself:
Probably on my face,
some wrinkles had already appeared.
He smiled weakly,
but his heart was a little unhappy.
He longed so much for the words “Hello Anh” *
which sound so tenderly sweet.
And the young girl is not that young and naive.
On the honor roll, she has a doctoral degree.
Who the young girl really is?
From where has she come from?
From her Asian looks and figure she appears to be
from the Eastern World full of legends.
He wanted to give her sweet praises but he felt hesitant.
Suddenly, he remembered the story of “Uncle Đạt” in an old story.
He looked at the sky with sparse white clouds.
Ok. Fine. Uncle then. But this uncle still not yet over the hill.

*em: (1) a person refer to himself/herself as “em” when speaking respectfully to an elder (brother/stranger that’s of the same generation. (2) girlfriend/wife refers to herself when speaking to her boyfriend/husband.
*anh => (1) a younger person refers to his/her brother or elder stranger with respect. (2) a girlfriend/wife addresses her boyfriend/lover/husband as “anh”.
“Chú” => (1) literally meaning Uncle. How a person address his/her blood uncle or a stranger of the earlier generation with respect.
