According to the Texas media, as well as the national news, Harvey was the largest storm to hit the region in twelve years, and the flooding it was expected to bring could go down in American history. The storm had begun forming offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and was moving toward the southernmost part of Texas, where it was expected to strengthen to Category 4 before making landfall. Houston and its surrounding areas\u2014including Kingwood, where I lived\u2014were almost certain to be affected. The material damage, and perhaps even the loss of life, could reach unprecedented levels.<\/p>\n

For several days, the media had been buzzing with dire predictions. Harvey was expected to bring consequences unlike anything the southern part of the state had experienced before. People were repeatedly warned to prepare themselves for what could be the worst yet to come.<\/p>\n

At 7:30 Wednesday evening, after teaching my last class, I drove over to the home of a fellow Tinh Long squadron friend to welcome another friend and classmate from the 4\/69 Quang Trung class, who had come all the way from Maryland to spend a week in Houston.<\/p>\n

We greeted one another with hugs and handshakes after several years apart, ever since I had visited him in Washington, D.C., where he and his wife had taken me in and treated me to several wonderful days together. I had no idea how many bottles of wine we had opened during those days\u2014his wife was quite a connoisseur and certainly knew how to raise a glass\u2014but I do remember that the moment I stepped into their home, the first thing we did was raise a shimmering glass of fragrant red wine to celebrate our reunion.<\/p>\n

During our conversation, we talked about getting together with some of our 4\/69 classmates in Houston that Saturday evening. We would find a place with live music, a dance floor, and some exercise\u2014yes, exercise, not rhythm and certainly not anything remotely resembling art. \u201cWe\u2019re old now,\u201d they explained.<\/p>\n

Thursday morning, after breakfast with the two couples from the night before and a few classmates from the Bellaire area, I wrote an email to eleven classmates asking for suggestions about where and how we should organize our gathering. The replies came in: some wanted to meet for lunch at a restaurant; others preferred gathering at someone\u2019s home, drinking, singing, and making merry. As for singing, our group had no shortage of backyard singers\u2014men and women alike!<\/p>\n

Still, no one could decide whether to meet on Saturday or Sunday, or exactly where. In the end, they gave me the authority to make the decision. After consulting with my Tinh Long friend, I decided we would meet Saturday evening at his house. He already had the band, and everyone could simply bring whatever food they wished to share.<\/p>\n

Friday morning was still \u201cjust another day.\u201d That meant I slept soundly while \u201cmy house\u201d got up early and went off to work. When I finally woke up, everything still seemed perfectly ordinary, even though weather warnings were becoming increasingly ominous. Hurricane Harvey was taking shape in the Gulf of Mexico and moving slowly toward the southernmost part of Texas.<\/p>\n

I sat peacefully in front of the internet, reading the news as usual, occasionally checking the weather reports. By late morning, however, the news about the storm had become increasingly serious. Forecasts now predicted that Harvey could reach Category 2, with winds around 90 miles per hour, when it made landfall.<\/p>\n

Then came the announcements that one school district had closed, followed by several more. My wife\u2019s workplace called to say that the office would close at 2 p.m. I decided to close my martial arts school before going to pick her up. I sent an email to the group announcing that our Saturday gathering was cancelled, adding that if conditions improved on Sunday, we would meet at Kim Son Buffet.<\/p>\n

When my wife got home, she immediately went grocery shopping for food and drinking water. I drove over to the school, put up the \u201cCLOSED\u201d sign, and hurried home. We had to scramble around before finding several cases of bottled water. After stopping at several stores, we finally managed to gather most of what we thought we would need.<\/p>\n

Back home, we checked the front yard and backyard, preparing for \u201cthe big one,\u201d as the radio and television kept calling it. I sat staring at the computer screen, waiting for whatever was coming, while outside the sun continued to shine brightly and the air conditioner hummed steadily.<\/p>\n

I called my mother and relatives living near the coast. I called my daughter and her husband downtown, reminding them to be careful. Their house was in the city, but the drainage system was terrible, so every heavy rain brought its own anxiety. My daughter was also nearing her due date\u2014which meant that we were about to become grandparents for the first time.<\/p>\n

They told us not to worry.<\/p>\n

Well, of course we would try not to worry. There was nothing else we could do.<\/p>\n

Then the phones began ringing among friends, everyone reminding everyone else of things we already knew. Some joked, \u201cThose media people just need something to do.\u201d One friend even declared, \u201cThere are two things in this world you should never trust: women and weather forecasts.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had to laugh along with them because, deep down, I thought there was actually something rather amusing\u2014and perhaps even true\u2014about it.<\/p>\n

Saturday morning arrived with fierce wind and rain. We heard that the storm had made landfall and that the winds had strengthened to Category 3, around 130 mph, though Harvey was still crawling slowly across southern Texas.<\/p>\n

I spent most of the day \u201cmeditating on the internet\u201d and answering phone calls. By afternoon, local news reported that the storm appeared to be strengthening toward Category 4. It was still some distance away, but cities southeast of Houston were already suffering severe damage.<\/p>\n

People were urged to stay indoors unless they had an essential reason to go out, so that the roads would remain open for those who might actually need to evacuate.<\/p>\n

The Governor suggested that Houstonians evacuate. The Mayor, meanwhile, urged people to \u201cstay in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

The drums beat one way, the trumpets another.<\/p>\n

And we ordinary folks stayed where we were, keeping our ears tuned to the television and radio, our eyes glued to the internet, waiting for the next development.<\/p>\n

The news grew more frantic by the hour, but there was little anyone could do except stock up on food and supplies.<\/p>\n

After midnight, I was exhausted and helpless, so I finally went to bed.<\/p>\n

But I had barely fallen asleep when I was suddenly jolted awake by \u201cmy house\u201d shaking my shoulder, while the rain hammered the roof and the wind chimes in the backyard rang wildly.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet up! Get up right now! Go outside and put away the umbrella, move the table inside, and take down all those wind chimes!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, my God! How could I have forgotten about all that this afternoon?\u201d<\/p>\n

I jumped out of my warm bed, put on a raincoat and hat, and headed into the backyard. I climbed a ladder\u2014not to ask the heavens for mercy, but to take down the wind chimes\u2014and tried to dismantle my little \u201ccaf\u00e9\u201d in the middle of the rain and violent gusts.<\/p>\n

My wife wanted to come outside and help, but I firmly refused. I told her to stay inside and watch television to see how far \u201cit\u201d had gotten.<\/p>\n

I worked under miserable conditions until sweat was dripping down my face. At last, things were secure enough.<\/p>\n

That would teach me not to forget things from one moment to the next.<\/p>\n

I came back inside, and my wife handed me a cup of hot tea. I asked for hot coffee, but she refused, afraid I would not be able to sleep again.<\/p>\n

She told me Harvey had strengthened to Category 4, with winds of 131 to 155 mph. The storm was now deep inland but moving painfully slowly\u2014only four or five miles an hour. At that rate, the destruction along its path could be catastrophic.<\/p>\n

At this pace, it might not reach Houston until morning or even noon.<\/p>\n

We went back to bed as the rain grew heavier. I lay there half awake, half asleep, as if trying to find a rhyme for a poem, until sleep finally took me\u2014while rain fell, wind lashed the house, and the storm raged outside.<\/p>\n

Because we had stayed up so late, we slept deeply until a phone call from an Air Force senior officer and friend living far away woke us.<\/p>\n

After the call, I looked at the clock. It was already 8 a.m.<\/p>\n

Outside, rain and wind blurred everything into a gray haze.<\/p>\n

I went to make coffee, planning to call my mother and everyone else afterward to check for their safty. Then the telephone rang. It startled me. It was my son-in-law. Immediately, a thousand worries flashed through my mind. He rarely called us. He FaceTimed me and asked, \u201cWhere\u2019s Mom?\u201d My wife hurried over.<\/p>\n

He sent us a message with the baby\u2019s birth time, length, and weight.<\/p>\n

It was true. Water had already flooded many of the highways leading toward the medical center.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Dad! Harvey is a boy\u2019s name\u2014and this hurricane is a Category 4 storm that has already caused so much destruction! We already have a name for her: V\u0169 H\u01b0\u01a1ng Ellington. We\u2019ll call her \u2018Ellie Vu.\u2019 It sounds like \u2018I love you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

A few days earlier, my daughter had asked me to suggest a Vietnamese name for the baby to go with H\u01b0\u01a1ng, the name they had chosen. She wanted something with a touch of poetry and music, something graceful and elegant.<\/p>\n

I had offered her a whole list: H\u01b0\u01a1ng An, H\u01b0\u01a1ng B\u00ecnh, H\u01b0\u01a1ng Lan, H\u01b0\u01a1ng Th\u01a1, H\u01b0\u01a1ng Thu, H\u01b0\u01a1ng Tr\u00e0.<\/p>\n

She rejected every single one.<\/p>\n

I repeated the names silently, \u201cEllieVu… Iloveyou… EllieVu… Iloveyou…\u201d It really did sound wonderful. It made perfect sense.<\/p>\n

And yet, somehow, I still loved the name H\u1ea1-Vy so very much.<\/p>\n

Perhaps my son-in-law had been busy sending the news to relatives and friends, because it was several hours before he sent us another video of the baby.<\/p>\n

By then, Grandma and Grandpa were already impatient.<\/p>\n

We played the video again and again, watching the little one move on the screen, utterly fascinated.<\/p>\n

We continued calling relatives, friends, and our in-laws, trying to keep track of everyone\u2019s situation while outside the rain poured down and the wind slammed against the windows as though someone were throwing buckets of water at the glass.<\/p>\n

But none of that mattered now. There was a great happiness in our hearts. We kept thinking about our beautiful little granddaughter, and we shared that happiness with our entire extended family and our closest friends.<\/p>\n

I knew that very few of my friends of the same generation had not yet become grandparents. Most of them already had grandchildren running all over the place, so becoming a grandparent was hardly news to them. But this was my great event. I was proud\u2014and, yes, a little shamelessly eager to brag about it.<\/p>\n

One friend said, \u201cThat little girl is something special! Welcome to the world, kiddo. All the schools are closed for a whole week, and even the President and First Lady came to visit! Hahaha!\u201d<\/p>\n

Those darn friends teased me all day long. But I was far too happy to care. Suddenly, I became extraordinarily compassionate and forgiving.<\/p>\n

Maybe having a grandchild was perfectly ordinary for other people, but for our extended family, this was a momentous event.<\/p>\n

By then, Harvey had weakened to Category 1. But authorities warned that the rain would remain heavy and could continue for several more days.<\/p>\n

I suspect many people breathed a sigh of relief, just as I did. My wife kept staring at the computer, studying every weather map and trying to find a route that might be open toward the medical center. <\/p>\n

There was no luck. Instead, more roads were closing, and the water kept rising. Even streets near our own home were flooding. Reports were coming in of deaths and people missing in the floodwaters.<\/p>\n

A Google search showed that the Kroger store less than a mile from our home was still open. So we drove there.<\/p>\n

The rain was still pouring. The parking lot was packed. We drove around several times before finally finding a space. We walked through the rain and stood in line outside under the awning.<\/p>\n

The store was enormous. In all the years we had lived there, we had never seen it even half full. But that day, people were lining up just to get inside.<\/p>\n

Fifteen minutes later, we finally made it through the doors. Inside, nearly everything was running low: food, drinks, meat, fish, fruit, bread. The shelves were bare. Fortunately, we had already stocked up.<\/p>\n

We wandered around and managed to find a few things we needed, even though most of them had probably been picked up, inspected, and put back several times by other shoppers. But who cared? When you are hungry, almost anything tastes good.<\/p>\n

On the way home, we suddenly felt like taking a little drive around the neighborhood. But the roads were empty, the trees were battered bare; rain kept falling, wind kept lashing everywhere. All around us, ahead and behind, water stretched like rivers and lakes combined.<\/p>\n

All Sunday evening, we stayed busy with messages from friends and relatives, especially from our daughter and her husband. Eventually our daughter said:<\/p>\n

\u201cBa, we\u2019re exhausted. We need to rest. The baby keeps waking up. We\u2019ll call you as soon as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

We understood immediately. We loved our daughter, our son-in-law, and our new granddaughter, but there was nothing to do except wait patiently.<\/p>\n

So I wandered around Facebook and continued following Harvey through the weather reports. The storm had weakened to Category 1, but the rain kept pouring down.<\/p>\n

Authorities warned that two reservoirs might have to release water, and residents living nearby became increasingly anxious as mandatory evacuation orders were issued.<\/p>\n

Exhausted, I finally fell asleep and woke the next morning to hear that one of the reservoirs had breached, while authorities were throwing everything they had into rescue and repair efforts.<\/p>\n

Monday morning, weather forecasts predicted that total rainfall could exceed forty inches. Every television station and news outlet showed flooded neighborhoods and highways that had turned into rivers.<\/p>\n

Again, I thought of little Ellie Vu.<\/p>\n

Outside, the wind still blows, the rain still falls. My heart longs to see my grandchild, but no road leads there. I became restless and drove around with my wife, hoping we might find a way through. But… <\/p>\n

Every road out of Kingwood was blocked. Low-lying areas, especially neighborhoods along the banks of the San Jacinto River, were submerged. Many roads had literally become rivers. Police blocked numerous areas and prevented residents from approaching. Firefighters moved from place to place in rescue boats.<\/p>\n

After wandering around and taking a few photographs, we turned back home.<\/p>\n

My mother and my siblings told us that the water had risen almost to their doorsteps, and all three families had leaks inside their homes.<\/p>\n

I felt helpless. There was nothing I could do to help. I even thought about volunteering with my son “th\u1eb1ng l\u00ednh” in Kingwood, but I was uneasy about leaving home.<\/p>\n

My \u201cth\u1eb1ng l\u00ednh.\u201d Perhaps he was even more restless than I was. He went into his closet, pulled out his combat boots and uniform, and put them on. He looked like a man preparing to charge into battle\u2014except that he had no weapon.<\/p>\n

He got on his bicycle every morning and rode from one shelter to another, helping rescue residents stranded by the flood.<\/p>\n

The day before, I had wanted to go with him, but the rain was so heavy that I stayed home. With all that time on my hands, I could not write, could not paint, and could not concentrate on anything. I simply drifted between Facebook, email, and telephone calls.<\/p>\n

All I could do was keep in touch with people and try to reassure them. A whole long day passed without my going anywhere. I was restless, useless, unable to settle down. I could only look at my daughter and granddaughter through FaceTime.<\/p>\n

I hardly ate. I drank coffee constantly. I paced around the house until my wife was nearly driven crazy. She, too, was sad that she could not be beside our daughter during such an important and difficult time.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, our daughter was in a hospital with everything she needed\u2014doctors, nurses, medicine, and proper care.<\/p>\n

And so it went until late at night, when exhaustion finally sent me to bed, still uneasy even though the storm had moved back out over the Gulf. Meteorologists predicted that it might gather strength once again.<\/p>\n

Tuesday morning came, and I woke to another verse in the same melancholy tune. Still, there was good news: the storm had finally left Houston. Some evacuated residents were beginning to return home, although the number of people still staying in emergency shelters had not decreased much.<\/p>\n

The rain continued intermittently. In some places, the first rays of sunshine were beginning to appear. Kingwood seemed to be following the same pattern.<\/p>\n

We got into the car and drove around again. Roads that had been closed for several days remained closed. Water still stretched everywhere.<\/p>\n

I was taking a few photographs when the rain began again, just as the media warned that the rain could continue for days and flooding could remain a serious threat, even though sunshine had appeared in some places.<\/p>\n

\nBut if I hesitate a few seconds, my hair is wet.<\/em><\/p>\n

At 7:45 that evening, my son-in-law FaceTimed us again. He told us that he had brought his wife and baby home. We were stunned\u2014and deeply moved. Our children had grandparents on both sides, uncles and aunts everywhere, an entire extended family waiting for them.<\/p>\n

And yet our daughter had quietly gone through labor almost completely alone, carried her baby through childbirth, stayed in the hospital for four long days because of the flooding, and then quietly carried her newborn home.<\/p>\n

This baby had been eagerly awaited by so many people, yet three days after her birth, not a single grandparent had been able to see her in person. Neither the paternal nor the maternal grandparents.<\/p>\n

We opened Google Maps and searched for a route to our daughter\u2019s house. Every road was still closed. If only we had wings. If only we could fly like birds. With that ache in our hearts, we went to bed late.<\/p>\n

All day Wednesday, the rain and wind eased considerably. Yet perhaps because water from upstream was flowing down, low-lying areas along the rivers and around West Lake Houston remained deeply flooded.<\/p>\n

In some places, we could still see the roof of a house one day, only to find it completely submerged the next.<\/p>\n

All day long, I kept checking Google Maps, watching the roads. Still, nothing had improved.<\/p>\n

To reassure all our relatives and distant friends who were anxiously following our situation, I wrote a few humorous verses and sent them by email and posted them on Facebook:<\/p>\n

I kept in touch with our friends from Maryland. We had originally planned to meet Saturday or Sunday, but during those days everyone was busy dealing with his own situation, and the roads were impassable.<\/p>\n

According to the original plan, my Maryland friends should have flown home early Wednesday morning. Instead, they were stranded by the storm and missed the opportunity to see several other classmates. I jokingly blamed the couple for bringing the hurricane with them.<\/p>\n

We laughed. My friend admitted that he had spent quite some time drinking and disturbing our Tinh Long’s friend and his wife, and had begun to feel guilty about imposing on them. He decided to move into a hotel and start looking for a flight home.<\/p>\n

Wednesday afternoon, Google Maps finally showed a possible route to our daughter\u2019s house, although it would take nearly two hours of driving around for a journey of only thirty-five miles. We were perfectly willing to take the risk.<\/p>\n

We called our daughter and told her we wanted to come. But they refused. I was sure they understood how desperately both sets of parents wanted to be close to our daughter and finally meet our granddaughter.<\/p>\n

Perhaps my son-in-law had also checked the roads and traffic conditions and simply did not want us to put ourselves through such a difficult journey.<\/p>\n

We went to bed with the latest video of our little granddaughter squirming and kicking away on the screen\u2014already doing her own little exercises.<\/p>\n

Thursday morning, we went to the grocery store to pick up a few more necessities. Good Lord! The store was still packed, and we had to stand in an incredibly long line, almost as though people were camping outside waiting to buy a newly released iPhone at a bargain price. We gave up and drove around Kingwood instead.<\/p>\n

The water had receded considerably, but many \u201criver roads\u201d remained blocked. Firefighters were still helping people rescue dogs and cats and assisting residents who needed to get in and out of flooded areas.<\/p>\n

Back home, I returned to Google Maps and searched again for a route to see baby H\u1ea1-Vy.<\/p>\n

Harvey had finally left Houston, carrying its floodwaters eastward. The sun was shining brilliantly. Yet our road to H\u1ea1-Vy was still long and filled with obstacles. \u201cH\u1ea1-Vy! Ellie Vu! I love you! Grandpa and Grandma want so badly to hold you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside, the sun was scorching and the temperature kept climbing. I was restless, unable even to concentrate on reading the internet.<\/p>\n

I went outside to put \u201cmy coffee-and-cigarette table\u201d back where it belonged. My \u201cth\u1eb1ng l\u00ednh\u201d was unemployed that day after returning from his bicycle rounds.<\/p>\n

People who had taken refuge in shelters were slowly leaving and heading home, carrying their belongings and facing whatever destruction the flood had left behind.<\/p>\n

I went back inside and jumped onto Google Maps again, watching the roads. Restless feet. My martial arts school had also been closed since Friday. The students were probably as restless as I was, because they kept reminding their parents to call and check whether classes would reopen.<\/p>\n

Then suddenly I shouted, \u201cGrandma of H\u1ea1-Vy! The road is open!\u201d I had spotted a long stretch of dark blue on the map connecting our house to our daughter\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally? Which road?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI-69 is still closed at the San Jacinto bridge, but we can go around through West Lake Houston. It\u2019ll only take an hour and fifteen minutes. Get ready!\u201d<\/p>\n

I immediately called our in-laws to tell them the good news. But to my surprise, they were already at our daughter\u2019s house.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re already here. The road from our side opened several hours ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh! Congratulations on getting there first. Stay there\u2014we\u2019re coming down!\u201d<\/p>\n

I hung up and hurried my wife. But she said she wanted to finish cooking a pot of ph\u1edf to bring to our daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much longer?\u201d I asked impatiently.<\/p>\n

I got ready and patiently waited. She seemed to be moving slower and slower, so I urged her again.<\/p>\n

Of course, I said that\u2014but I drove pretty fast anyway. My passenger-driver had to keep nagging me and reminding me to slow down. For an entire week, we had felt trapped in a cage. Now we were like chickens suddenly released into the yard. And most of all, our granddaughter had already been in the world for four days, and this was finally our chance to see her.<\/p>\n

Only an hour later, we were knocking on our daughter\u2019s door. Her parents-in-law had already left.<\/p>\n

Finally, Grandma and Grandpa were able to hold the baby in their arms. What a miraculous joy!<\/p>\n
