The house is located behind the main house\u2019s yard, which in order to reach it, one has to cross a large yard where many flowers and vegetables are planted and where the landowner and his wife are often seen completely wrapped up in gardening together. Rows of colorful flowers enhance the romance of their rented house and help them feel less self-pity. <\/p>\n The life of the brothers is also quiet and is immersed in much gnawing longing. The brothers always raise the question no one can answer, that is, \u201cHow can we know the news of our family?\u201d The spare time at night seems too long for the pains, the instability, and the worry about the future. There is no reason why one should live quietly like this in this remote place!?! No one seems to remember when all three of them started to drink beer instead of water and have cigarettes in their hands! There are so many times he wanted to tell his little siblings not to drink beer or smoke cigarettes, but how can he say that while he chain-smokes all day long and drinks beer without food at night? For compensation, the brothers love and concede to each other as they all want to strengthen others while feeling very unstable themselves! He always has the conceded privilege of taking a shower before his two siblings do in the afternoon after their daily work. <\/p>\n His two siblings often say that \u201cOlder brother is regarded as father,\u201d so they always listen and make concessions to him. Oh yes, he really wants to use this power to tell them not to imitate his habits of beer drinking and cigarette smoking, but his mouth is shut except for smiling away the issue! He always remembers his father\u2019s teaching of exercising justice and respecting democracy, so he never drowns them out or overpowers them. Any decision is discussed to get the consensus; they shop together most of the time, cooking is equally divided, but his siblings are absolutely firm in not letting him wash the dishes or clean the house.<\/p>\n While one of his siblings is studying an English book, which has been brought over along with a loaned guitar by a Mexican friend working at the employment office, when it is known that he likes to sing along in his spare time – the other cooks the evening meal. And he goes out watering the golden chrysanthemum bushes that he has brought home after tagging along with the landowner couple to the market last weekend. He still remembers the cute poem verse of poet Nguy\u00ean Sa, \u201cMissing her yellow dress, I love chrysanthemum flowers in blooming,\u201d because it appears that this talented poet has probably written the verse for him (the girl he left in S\u00e0i G\u00f2n used to wear a yellow dress when she went out with him). It is considerably cool in the autumn afternoon of Pearsall. Looking at the golden flowers wavering in the autumn wind in the strangely quiet air where the brown leaves are silently falling one by one makes him feel very much fretty in the heart and tightened at his chest! He misses his parents and siblings till it hurts! He suddenly remembers the song A Mother\u2019s Heart by Y V\u00e2n and feels the instant urge to sing! He goes back to get the guitar and sits in the old chair at the front door with an overwhelmingly unending feeling of longing for his mother:<\/p>\n \u201cMother\u2019s heart is like the Pacific Ocean\u2026 She doesn\u2019t mind the rain and shine of life. The dew and sun to whitening her hair. She enjoys being with her child for day and night. Lulling her child to sleep always.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n At this moment, his singing seemed to choke, his voice quivered, and his strumming faded! Yes, that\u2019s true, Mother! Striving her best to raise up her children so they would become soldiers and to expect them to protect the precious motherland, but you have not suspected that that situation has happened, haven\u2019t you? Mother, your oldest son has lost so bitterly in life to the point of being thought of as having died on the battlefield, and he and his two siblings have had to wander in a strange land as half workers half students, with an uncertain future and without any news whatsoever from their family! He suddenly recalls the memorial portion of his parting brother! <\/p>\n It was terribly sad remembering the last days of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). His oldest brother was a Ranger who had been stationed and defending H\u1ed1 B\u00f2 in Tr\u1ea3ng B\u00e0ng. It was at the end of March 1975 when the enemy overran the post and it was considered lost; his brother had called for air support and it happened that he incidentally was covering the area at the moment and was ordered to help with the rescue, but it seemed useless when the enemy had overrun the post; his brother then requested direct bombardment into the middle of his own soldiers who had been in a hopeless close combat with the sea of Vietnamese communist soldiers (VCs)! He remembered as clearly as the day the desperate but heroic and determined words of his brother:<\/p>\n \u2013 The enemy has overrun the post! You ought to drop the bombs onto our heads; I\u2019d rather die than risk being captured alive by the H\u1ed3 enemy! Farewell! <\/p>\n The line went dead with a dry \u201cclick\u201d and under him, the left side of the post was fully covered with blinding fire and smoke! He had entered the battle zone crying while dropping all the bombs he had been carrying onto the battlefield and had left it, feeling as overwhelmingly numbed as dead with the most tormenting pain of his life! <\/p>\n His life had been in turmoil for a few weeks since but he still performed flying missions almost every day. He did that voluntarily; he begged to be allowed to fly as his blood was boiling with the uncontainable urge for revenge. He had followed the news on the western fronts with all ears for the news. His brother\u2019s fighting unit had been reported as lost without communication! He had hoped and prayed for a miracle of his brother\u2019s safe return!<\/p>\n One day, his brother suddenly came to the rental house of his and his siblings\u2019 right in the middle of S\u00e0ig\u00f2n dressed in a ragged army uniform, unrecognizable, and was as pale as a corpse! He was still in a dazed state as if in a dream when his brother embraced him and said unintelligibly and hastily in a crying voice, \u201cMy brother! It\u2019s over! Our home is divided! Our country is lost!\u201d And his brother continued in one breath, \u201cI have come back here by myself and the communication guy, and both of us have crossed the jungles in hiding ever since. I feel ashamed of myself for not having been able to defend and keep the post, for not protecting my fellow soldiers; the whole unit has been almost destroyed, and there is no news of the survivors or their whereabouts! Regrettably, I have not dared to commit suicide to be together with them because I think that there is still hope, that there is still a chance to avenge this shameful affair! I have come back and been wandering in S\u00e0i G\u00f2n in the last few days, have planned to submit to voluntary reporting for a chance to revenge but with present situation it seems hopeless so I come back here to visit you guys and I will find ways to come back to our parents and family because I have been away from all these for quite so long a time!\u201d That was the 27th of April, 1975!<\/p>\n The brothers had been melting into tears, embracing each other! He had been aware that his brother was a person who was afraid of nothing, of neither heaven nor earth nor anybody, and was one who had enlisted in many different fiercely daring military arms famous for their courage and violently intrepidness. He had never seen his brother crying! He had then begged his brother to stay with him because of the dangerous situation, and the roads back to his home country had been full of enemy soldiers! His brother assured him in saying that if he had come back from the dead, then there would have been nothing to be afraid of, that his brother needed to come back to their parents and to the family during the turmoil! Then the brothers had dined their farewell meal tearfully! <\/p>\n His line of thought is interrupted by the two hands, softly placed onto his shoulders, of his two siblings, who have been standing there already! Seeing their reddened eyes, he is unable to hold back his tears! The three brothers embrace each other, letting their tear streams flow freely along! <\/p>\n After a long while, when the sorrow has subsided, the youngest brother asks for the guitar to resume the unfinished song, and the three brothers continue to sing the song in tearful sobbing\u2026<\/p>\n Mother\u2019s heart fills the villages near and far. Yes Mother! Never in our lives have we ever wanted to come back to our parents to lean on them like this moment! Never in our lives has this song made us feel strongly and fully touched by it like this moment! <\/p>\n He and his siblings stand up to come back into the house for dinner, but all of them stop suddenly because there is a golden-haired girl who appears at the back door, waving hello to them. Perhaps detecting their somewhat surprise and their staring, she approaches them and says in a natural tone:<\/p>\n – You guys continue singing because I like to hear the type of music you have just sung very much, which I have never listened to. What are the lyrics all about that sound so sorrowful? <\/p>\n He has not had the time to answer when the girl continues hastily:<\/p>\n – I am quite sure that that is Vietnamese music, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n – Ugh, how can you know that is Vietnamese music when you said you have never listened to it before?<\/p>\n – I think that the Vietnamese will sing Vietnamese music! The girl winks one of her eyes.<\/p>\n – How do you know that we are Vietnamese and not Chinese, Japanese or Korean?<\/p>\n The girl smiles mischievously and points at him, saying:<\/p>\n – I also know that you guys are singing a homesick song, that your name is Twan, and you are the oldest of the three, that you guys are new coming refugees who have rented this house for close to two weeks, and who are working for a nearby Ford dealer. <\/p>\n – I am sure that the landowners have told you this, miss. By the way, how are you related to the landowners?<\/p>\n – They are my paternal grandparents. I just came here this afternoon with my parents to visit my grandparents for a few days before going back to school.<\/p>\n His two siblings are concerned about the tiring of their hands in sign talking, so he naturally becomes the spokesperson for all three of them. The young girl introduces herself as Deana Tricks. His two siblings also introduce themselves in turn, and the young girl shakes hands with each of them. It seems she holds his hand a little bit longer when she shakes hands with him, looking straight into his eyes and making him feel so uncomfortable that he has to look away. Realizing that the young girl is perspicacious, friendly, intelligent, witty, and very much bold, he feels a little happy:<\/p>\n – Where did you come from? And how long are you staying?<\/p>\n – We came from Houston. It takes us four hours to drive. My parents usually allow me to visit my grandparents each summer vacation before returning to school. It is so quiet and sad here, there are only vast farms, and I have never wanted to stay for long, but my parents say that we will stay until Sunday before returning!<\/p>\n – How many times have you come here?<\/p>\n – Almost every year, as far as I can remember. He waits until her figure has gone behind the door frame and until after a second hand waving before sitting down at the table with his two siblings. His next-oldest brother says while scooping the rice:<\/p>\n – Death to Fourth Brother, there seems to be a thunderbolt somewhere! He persistently talks all the time and does not let his younger siblings \u201cpractice speaking\u201d English!<\/p>\n Having finished his sentence, he and the younger sibling burst out laughing. He brandishes his arm, threatening to strike his younger sibling, and the latter withdraws his head, sticks out his tongue in his clown act. <\/p>\n – Because I was concerned that you guys would tire out your hands so pitifully!<\/p>\n – Gosh! We have been working in an American company already!<\/p>\n – Okay, tomorrow afternoon I will keep quiet so you two can \u201cpractice\u201d then! No more requests for assistance, alright?<\/p>\n Finishing the sentence, he pushes lightly at the shoulder of the older of his two siblings. The latter then says:<\/p>\n – Oh my God, he still bullies his brothers. It has only been a few months away from Sister Ng\u1ecdc Anh, yet he already wants to betray her love! If I can contact her, I will tell her about that!<\/p>\n His smile is extinguished at the mention of that familiar name. He has to try hard to swallow the half-choked chunk of rice inside his throat. The younger sibling also realizes his slip of tongue, so the two of them resume their eating in silence. When the rice bowl is empty, he quietly stands up, walks to the refrigerator, takes the beer to the door, and sits down there. The younger sibling calls out to him:<\/p>\n – Brother Four, I slip my tongue in saying the name, I am sorry! <\/p>\n – You are not at fault. I always think about her. It is just a sudden feeling of sorrow only! <\/p>\n Outside, the night has covered everywhere, and it is immeasurably desolate and deserted. He thinks about Ng\u1ecdc Anh bitterly, about the person presumably to be married to him. Had the war not climbed up the ladder, they would have been together for a whole life! Had he not been as na\u00efve as a lamb in believing that the whole city of S\u00e0ig\u00f2n would not have fallen into enemy\u2019s hands so abruptly and suddenly; had he been as bold as some of his friends who had brought their wives and children to the camp at the end time then she would have been with him, sharing the good and the bad together and enduring the difficulties and the being up and down together always, and not being in this lonesomeness! He feels very upset at himself for having been so stupid! He sighs heavily and feels the sorrow rising up high. My dear Ng\u1ecdc Anh, where are you now, and what are you doing, and are you safe, my dear? <\/p>\n He is so immersed in the longing that he blurts out the vague song verse: \u201cNo one\u2019s left, return roads so long, those nights apart, burning wine, I drink all my life, return each good news to the waiting crowd!\u201d<\/p>\n The verse in the song \u201cPh\u00f4i Pha\u201d (Fading Away), composed by Tr\u1ecbnh C\u00f4ng S\u01a1n, incidentally clings to his subconsciousness, just waiting for a chance to overwhelm him with its overflowing feelings of self-pity! He does not like the composer Tr\u1ecbnh at all, but he\u2019d rather hates the ignorance and the underhanded disloyalty of this heavenly gifted composer; but there is one thing he cannot deny, that is, that composer Tr\u1ecbnh is really a musical genius! Had the composer Tr\u1ecbnh used his heavenly talents to serve the modest needs of the government, the public servants, the army, and the people of South Vietnam, i.e., the wish of being able to live in prosperity and to breathe the air of real democracy and freedom. Yes! Had he been!!! The more he looks back, the more he realizes how unstable and na\u00efve he has been! Now he is tormented by thinking in circles, the meaningless \u201chad it been\u201d!!!<\/p>\n He continues to sit, thinking deeply in the bottomless sorrow contained in so many burned cigarettes and empty beer bottles. In his mind, he is mumbling the sorrowful lyrics: \u201cPlease come back, there\u2019s nothing in life, bright hair will fade, many times, back from night garden, someone\u2019s stealthy steps, like the old spirit\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n He has dozed off in the chair at the veranda without knowing, until the time his younger sibling helps carry him inside and into his room. Only then does he start feeling the absorbing coldness and realize that the being soaked from head to toe and inside out!
