May no one take offense.<\/p>\n<p>When the late afternoon sun begins to fade beyond the porch,<br \/>\nthere is a young man\u2014barely past adolescence\u2014<br \/>\ngazing into the falling dusk,<br \/>\nsmiling to himself<br \/>\nas old memories quietly return\u2026<\/p>\n<p><center>* * *<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Murmuring to myself the Air Force March by V\u0103n Cao,<br \/>\nI reach the line: \u201cOh pilots\u2014glory for all time,\u201d<br \/>\nand I cannot help but smile and wonder:<\/p>\n<p>Why \u201cglory for all time\u201d?<br \/>\nAre pilots truly so glorious\u2014<br \/>\nor is it simply a generous lyric bestowed by the composer?<\/p>\n<p>In more than seven years of life as a pilot,<br \/>\nI have never once heard anyone solemnly say such words.<br \/>\nWhat I heard instead, over and over again, was this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t bring shame to the Air Force.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t bring shame to the pilots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t bring shame to the Air Force.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t bring shame to the pilots.<br \/>\nDon\u2019t bring shame to the Navy.<br \/>\nTo the Airborne.<br \/>\nTo the Green Berets.<br \/>\nTo the Brown Berets.<br \/>\nTo the Armored Corps.<br \/>\nTo the infantry divisions.<br \/>\nTo reconnaissance units.<br \/>\nTo any branch.<br \/>\nTo any base.<br \/>\nTo regional forces.<br \/>\nTo popular forces.<br \/>\nTo military police.<br \/>\nTo the National Police\u2026<br \/>\neven to the Self-Defense units, to rural development teams\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In short\u2014every branch bore its pride,<br \/>\nits own quiet dignity.<br \/>\nThe entire military of South Vietnam<br \/>\nreminded itself, again and again,<br \/>\nto uphold honor and discipline with reverence.<\/p>\n<p>I would not dare speak for the glory of other branches,<br \/>\nnor for the elder pilots who came before me.<br \/>\nSurely they were men of complete merit<br \/>\nto enter that world of those<br \/>\nwho ride the clouds and return with the wind.<\/p>\n<p>From the founding of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force<br \/>\non July 1, 1955,<br \/>\nto the day I stepped through the gates of Phi Long<br \/>\nin December 1968\u2014<br \/>\nonly thirteen years had passed.<\/p>\n<p>Yet that distance felt vast\u2014immeasurable.<\/p>\n<p>Because in August 1965,<br \/>\nwhile others prepared for university,<br \/>\nI followed whispers and dreams,<br \/>\neagerly applying to become a pilot\u2014<br \/>\nonly to fail miserably<br \/>\nand return to school<br \/>\namong cicadas and flame-red flamboyant blossoms.<\/p>\n<p>Three years later,<br \/>\nwhen the Air Force expanded rapidly,<br \/>\nI was finally given another chance.<\/p>\n<p>And truth be told, I was no weakling\u2014<br \/>\nmy physique above average,<br \/>\nthe strength of a regular fighter in the ring,<br \/>\nthe vigor of youth bold enough to break ivory\u2014<br \/>\nyet I failed\u2026<br \/>\nbecause of health reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Health reasons?<\/p>\n<p>Three filled molars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll hurt at high altitude,\u201d<br \/>\nthe dentist said coldly.<br \/>\nI argued\u2014it was only chipped enamel, not pain\u2014<br \/>\nbut he replied simply:<br \/>\n\u201cNo, sir. Failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So difficult it was.<\/p>\n<p>Before applying, I had undergone a full medical exam.<br \/>\nEverything passed\u2014heart, lungs, all strong\u2014<br \/>\nexcept for those three teeth.<\/p>\n<p>They had been chipped, not from decay,<br \/>\nbut from a foolish trick of youth:<br \/>\nI used to chew glass for show.<\/p>\n<p>That childish recklessness<br \/>\ncost me years.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the first condition to become a pilot<br \/>\nwas perfect health\u2014<br \/>\nalong with education, clean background,<br \/>\nand no ties to communism.<\/p>\n<p>But that was only the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>A pilot had to endure rigorous military training\u2014<br \/>\nharsh, relentless\u2014<br \/>\nforging discipline, loyalty,<br \/>\nbrotherhood and sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>To shape iron will,<br \/>\nunyielding strength,<br \/>\nand a spirit that would not abandon comrades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever leave a brother behind,<br \/>\nnever forget a friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After surviving that crucible,<br \/>\nfuture pilots were sent to intensive language training\u2014<br \/>\nmonths of immersion into a Western world:<br \/>\nculture, manners, conversation,<br \/>\nhow to eat with grace,<br \/>\nhow to live with refinement.<\/p>\n<p>Only after passing demanding exams<br \/>\ncould one move on.<\/p>\n<p>Then came uniforms\u2014formal and ceremonial\u2014<br \/>\nand departure overseas.<\/p>\n<p>Only then did flight training begin.<\/p>\n<p>From the simplest aircraft<br \/>\nto the most advanced available\u2014<br \/>\ndepending on one\u2019s ability.<\/p>\n<p>Endless learning. Endless tests.<\/p>\n<p>No one knew for certain<br \/>\nhe would become a pilot<br \/>\nuntil the day an instructor<br \/>\npinned the wings upon his chest.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly eighteen months of hardship abroad,<br \/>\nhe returned home\u2014<br \/>\nhead held high\u2014<br \/>\nyet still trained further<br \/>\nbefore joining senior pilots<br \/>\nto \u201cride the winds into battle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daily, pilots became<br \/>\n\u201cbirds in the endless sky,\u201d<br \/>\nliving within vast horizons.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps that is why<br \/>\na pilot writing poetry<br \/>\nor prose<br \/>\nwas nothing unusual.<\/p>\n<p>War left no time for tomorrow.<br \/>\nOne might take off in the morning<br \/>\nand never return by dusk.<\/p>\n<p>Yet there was a strange fortune:<br \/>\nwe were city soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>We walked polished streets,<br \/>\npassed university gates,<br \/>\nuntil one day<br \/>\nwe vanished into the sky\u2014<br \/>\nand forgot the road back.<\/p>\n<p>We lived fiercely, fully:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the nation calls her sons to go,<br \/>\nwhy mourn the body left behind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No regret.<br \/>\nFly hard.
