But then another thought crept into his mind: \u201cCould it be that the flame of that brief romance long ago is still smoldering somewhere within us?\u201d Or was it simply that the circumstances of their meeting had been so unusual, that they had been so young, and that those uncertain early days in exile had made the memory so deeply etched in his mind?<\/p>\n

Tu\u1ea5n wondered whether he was being too presumptuous. A brief encounter under unusual circumstances could leave a lasting impression. When occasionally stirred by a letter, a song, or an unexpected event, it could come alive again with all the feelings of that time. But that did not mean the two people still shared the same feelings. Tu\u1ea5n understood that he could not know for certain what was happening in Deana’s heart.<\/p>\n

The more he thought, the more unsettled he became; and the more unsettled he felt, the more hesitant he grew.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, we can take care of ourselves and are well prepared for the near future.*<\/p>\n

It seems like only yesterday that a carefree little girl, as lively as a sparrow and not even finished with high school, has now become an experienced university professor, soon to retire. *We won’t have to worry about work from morning till night, or about looking after the children. No more being startled awake by an alarm clock. We can eat or sleep whenever we want during the day. We have complete freedom to decide what we should do and whom we want to see, without having to ask anyone’s permission.*<\/p>\n

*I wish you good health and happiness, Deana. Let’s simply regard each other as friends; please don’t feel awkward about anything. Write to me whenever you feel like it. Forty-two years have passed, and although we haven’t met again, being able to maintain such a pleasant connection is something truly precious. Whenever you come to Houston to visit your mother’s grave, please let me know. We can meet for coffee or share a friendly meal.*<\/p>\n

After finishing his reply, Tu\u1ea5n read it over several times before sending it. He felt satisfied, and his mind was more at ease.<\/p>\n

Sometimes life needs pleasant surprises like this, to help us get through the hardships and difficulties it is always ready to bring.<\/p>\n

The Last Chapter of a Love Story \u2014 With No Promise of Return<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than half a century has passed since that summer on the farmland in Pearsall.<\/p>\n

Deana has now retired and become a grandmother, living the life of a woman who has passed through youth and all its many changes. Tu\u1ea5n, too, has reached the final stretch of a long journey. Those early days of uncertainty in America have receded into the past, giving way to family, work, and memories that time has gradually rearranged.<\/p>\n

From time to time, Tu\u1ea5n still remembers Deana. He does not think of her every day, nor does the memory always stir his heart. Sometimes, an old song, a quiet afternoon, or a fleeting recollection of those early years in exile is enough to bring the blonde girl back to mind.<\/p>\n

He remembers the little cottage behind the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Tricks. He remembers those afternoons sitting with his two younger brothers, playing and singing, when homesickness would catch in their throats. And he remembers Deana, the girl who appeared so naturally, as though, amid the uncertainty of his life, there were still pleasant things that could arrive without warning.<\/p>\n

Tu\u1ea5n also remembers Ng\u1ecdc Anh, the woman who had remained behind in a Saigon he did not know whether he would ever see again. His feelings for Deana were real, and so was his remorse over Ng\u1ecdc Anh. One does not necessarily have to erase the other. The young man of those days carried within him both a love with no known day of reunion and the unexpected happiness of a brief romance. He could not know what the future would bring, much less how the experiences of that time would eventually become memories.<\/p>\n

Perhaps that is why Deana was more than simply a girl who had passed through Tu\u1ea5n’s life. She was connected to a very special moment\u2014those early days of exile, when his homeland was far away, his family remained unheard from, and the future was still shrouded in uncertainty. She could not ease those losses, nor could she change his fate. But for a brief period, she brought laughter, warmth, and a happiness Tu\u1ea5n had never expected to experience again.<\/p>\n

Later, when Linda appeared on the flight from Phoenix to Houston, and the letters renewed his connection with Deana, Tu\u1ea5n began to realize that some memories, though seemingly asleep, never truly disappear. They simply remain quietly in a deep corner of the heart, waiting for the slightest sign to rise and come alive again.<\/p>\n

Then, in 2017, while Houston was still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, Deana unexpectedly wrote to ask about him. But he also understood that life was not made up only of beautiful memories. There are people we once met and cared for, and after many years we may still ask after them as friends. It was a simple reply, but for Tu\u1ea5n, it was a way of appreciating the affection of someone from the past while preserving the peace of his present life.<\/p>\n

Tu\u1ea5n was no longer certain that avoiding the reunion years earlier had been the only way to preserve the memory. Perhaps, had he gone to Colorado Springs, he might have enjoyed a pleasant afternoon with Deana and her family. Perhaps the meeting would not have taken anything away, but might even have given an unfinished story a gentler ending. Or perhaps everything would have turned out so ordinarily that he would have realized he had worried far too much.<\/p>\n

All of these were only possibilities. Life does not give anyone the chance to go back and try a different choice.<\/p>\n

Tu\u1ea5n did not want to keep blaming himself. Nor did he want to convince himself that he had made the right decision. Some decisions in life are made not because we understand everything clearly, but because, at that particular moment, we can only do what seems most reasonable. Looking back later, we may regret it or wonder what might have happened, but we cannot relive those days to discover the one absolutely correct answer.<\/p>\n

And some romances, if they can be called love, do not need a clearly defined ending in order to remain in our memories. They do not necessarily have to lead to marriage, nor do they require promises or a reunion to prove that they once mattered. Sometimes they simply pass through our lives, leaving behind a quiet trace that the years cannot entirely erase.<\/p>\n

Tu\u1ea5n did not know how much of that encounter Deana still remembered. Perhaps, for her, it had been no more than a pleasant vacation at her grandparents’ home, with a strange young Vietnamese man toward whom she had felt an attraction. Perhaps she had forgotten many details, just as he himself could not be certain that he remembered everything. But at least the letters exchanged more than thirty-six years later told him that he had not been an entirely nameless figure in her memory.<\/p>\n

That was enough.<\/p>\n

Not enough to rekindle a romance, nor enough to erase the regrets. But enough for Tu\u1ea5n to know that the summer in Pearsall had meant something to both of them, even if each might have carried away a different version of the memory.<\/p>\n

Tu\u1ea5n did not know whether he would ever meet Deana again. He no longer tried to find an answer to that question. Each of their lives continued forward, with loved ones, joys, hopes, and losses of their own.
