There is a little matter in our family that, if it were ever brought before the \u201cFamily Court,\u201d I doubt very much that I would win the case. Grandma has told me more than once that I have not been entirely fair to you and your sister. Even Aunt Minh Ch\u00e2u has raised the same question. Your mother, though more gently, has occasionally expressed a similar opinion.<\/p>\n

The reason is quite simple: when your sister H\u1ea1-Vy was born, Grandpa did all sorts of things for her. I wrote poems, composed songs, wrote short stories, and then wrote even more stories about the day she came into this world. But when Y-Thanh arrived, Grandpa suddenly… **ran completely out of ammunition.**<\/p>\n

So, if we examine the \u201cevidence,\u201d H\u1ea1-Vy has an entire literary treasure chest created by her grandfather, while you, to this day, have hardly had a proper piece of writing devoted to you\u2014apart from one little poem welcoming you into the world.<\/p>\n

That does make me sound a little guilty, but I have to admit… **they do have a point!**<\/p>\n

H\u1ea1-Vy was our first grandchild, so when she was born, I experienced the feeling of being appointed to a position I had secretly longed for all my life: **Grandpa**. In late August 2017, while Hurricane Harvey was battering Houston, our little granddaughter arrived. <\/p>\n

Outside, there was rain, wind, flooding, and enough worry to go around for everyone; but inside our family, Grandma and Grandpa suddenly had a very special reason to celebrate\u2014and celebrate we did, with all our hearts.<\/p>\n

I gave her the Vietnamese name **H\u1ea1-Vy**\u2014a traditional, graceful, and lovely Vietnamese name for a girl. Perhaps because she was our first grandchild, and because she entered the world under such extraordinary circumstances, I had far too many things I wanted to say. The words simply came rushing out. I wrote poems, composed music, and wrote stories. In plain everyday language, you might say I had completely fallen under the **creative spell** of my first granddaughter.<\/p>\n

Then, three years later, in June 2020, Y-Thanh arrived in the midst of the raging coronavirus pandemic. Oh, what greater joy could there have been! And yet, this time the whole world was in a state of panic. COVID-19 had turned humanity upside down. People wore masks, avoided one another, hesitated to shake hands or embrace, and even family gatherings became difficult. In the middle of that strange and unsettling time, a little boy was born.<\/p>\n

Just like your sister H\u1ea1-Vy, your parents gave you the name **Ethan Ho\u00e0ng V\u0169**, while Grandpa gave you the Vietnamese name **Y-Thanh**.<\/p>\n

And then… nothing.<\/p>\n

The creative engine simply stopped. No poem, no song, no story like the ones I had made for your big sister. There was no \u201cspecial artistic production celebrating the arrival of Y-Thanh\u201d\u2014except for that one little poem.<\/p>\n

The truth is, I don’t really understand why I suddenly lost my creative spark. I loved you\u2014oh, how I loved you! More than I knew what to do with. And you were also our **first grandson**, a position that naturally carried something very special. But somehow, the thing that had once traveled so quickly from my head to my keyboard suddenly… **went on an unexplained leave of absence.**<\/p>\n

Perhaps it stayed away a little too long. A few months became a few years. Every time I thought about it, I would tell myself, \u201cI’ll write something for Y-Thanh one of these days.\u201d But that \u201cone of these days\u201d seemed to be an extremely busy character. It kept making promises and never showed up.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Y-Thanh kept growing. You learned to smile, to run, to talk, and to do all sorts of things that brought joy to the whole family. I watched you grow, all the while knowing that I still owed you something\u2014a debt in the world of literature and the arts.<\/p>\n

Here, Grandpa must say a few things about his beloved grandson.<\/p>\n

You are special not only because you are **our family’s first grandson**, but also because you hold a unique place on both sides of the family. On your father’s side, you are the **first grandchild and the first grandson of your paternal grandparents**. On your mother’s side, your sister H\u1ea1-Vy was the first grandchild, making you the **first grandson of your maternal grandparents**.<\/p>\n

You have shown yourself to be remarkably intelligent, quick to learn, and blessed with an excellent memory. Your parents have given you the opportunity to learn all sorts of things\u2014martial arts, piano, golf, basketball, soccer… and you have done reasonably well in all of them.<\/p>\n

You listen to your parents and follow their instructions remarkably well. Only once in a while, when you get into one of your little moods, does the whole family simply… surrender.<\/p>\n

Grandpa is fairly \u201cstubborn\u201d himself, but every now and then I have to admit that you can be quite the little **\u201cx\u00ed ph\u1ee5\u201d**\u2014a stubborn little rascal!<\/p>\n

Then, just a few days ago, I had the opportunity to take Aunt Minh Ch\u00e2u to a fundraising event for the temple. Suddenly, Aunt Minh Ch\u00e2u brought up something she had apparently been wondering about for some time\u2014the unfairness of Grandpa toward you.<\/p>\n

I laughed when I heard it, but at the same time, I found it rather difficult to argue my case.<\/p>\n

Because if we put the two \u201cfiles\u201d side by side, the comparison really isn’t very flattering to Grandpa. H\u1ea1-Vy’s file contains poems, songs, stories, and all sorts of things, while Y-Thanh’s file contains almost nothing except one little poem I wrote shortly after you were born in July 2020.<\/p>\n

Welcoming Y-Thanh**<\/strong><\/p>\n

My good daughter has achieved another feat,
\nGiving birth to a son in the midst of COVID’s reign;
\nWhile people were separated, kept apart,
\nShe faced the ordeal alone, as mothers have before.<\/p>\n

On your father’s side, the family rejoiced,

Three days later, father, mother, and baby left the hospital,

If H\u1ea1-Vy was the little girl who came into our family in the midst of a devastating Houston hurricane, then Y-Thanh was the little boy who arrived in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. You two came into our lives at times when the world was facing extraordinary hardship, yet both of you brought Grandma and Grandpa, on both sides of the family, an extraordinary amount of joy and happiness.<\/p>\n

H\u1ea1-Vy gave me the feeling of becoming a grandfather for the first time. Y-Thanh taught me that a grandfather’s heart has no fixed limit when it comes to love.<\/p>\n

When another grandchild comes along, the heart does not have to divide itself in half or thirds. Somehow, it simply **expands**.<\/p>\n

I kept thinking that I had to write a really beautiful poem or essay for you, compose a wonderful song, and create a truly special story because you were my first grandson\u2014and who knew when, or whether, there would ever be another grandson?<\/p>\n

But the more I told myself that I had to write something wonderful, the less I could write. In the end, all I seemed to carry inside me was a literary debt that had been accumulating year after year until today.<\/p>\n

Well, today I am paying it.<\/p>\n

Not because anyone has actually come to collect the debt, but because so many people have pointed out that Grandpa’s sense of fairness seems to have a problem.<\/p>\n

That isn’t really true, is it? \ud83d\ude1c<\/p>\n

I was simply… **temporarily out of creative fire.** \ud83d\ude18<\/p>\n

Today I suddenly realized that if I kept waiting for the perfect inspiration, the right words, and enough time, then by the time I finally wrote something, you might already be taller than Grandpa and perhaps even finished college.<\/p>\n

By then, the moment would have been gone.<\/p>\n

So I am writing today.<\/p>\n

I am writing for Y-Thanh\u2014the little boy born in the middle of COVID, **our family’s first grandson**, and the child Grandpa has loved with all his heart, even though it took him rather a long time to prove that love through… literature and music.<\/p>\n

If someday you read what I created for H\u1ea1-Vy and notice that she has much more than you do, please don’t rush to file another complaint against Grandpa.<\/p>\n

I confess.<\/p>\n

H\u1ea1-Vy came first, so she took quite a lot of Grandpa’s words with her. You came later, but you took something else from me\u2014the patience to keep waiting for the right moment.<\/p>\n

Because sometimes, the more deeply we love someone, the harder it becomes to find the words.<\/p>\n

And today I finally understand that love does not have to be divided equally according to the number of poems, songs, or pages one writes.<\/p>\n

Some kinds of love are written down; other kinds simply remain quietly in the heart, day after day, until one day they finally find a way out.<\/p>\n

Y-Thanh, if someday you ask me, \u201cGrandpa, how come you wrote so much for my sister but waited until now to write for me?\u201d<\/p>\n

I won’t try to make excuses.<\/p>\n

I’ll simply say, \u201cWell, my love for you had already filled all the empty spaces I normally reserved for poetry and music.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then I will give you a very tight hug, like a mother bear hugging her cub. \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n

And today, Grandpa is also going to turn that old poem into a song. I will ask some friends to help make a special video to commemorate the day you came into this world.<\/p>\n

So the literary debt Grandpa owed Y-Thanh, after years of \u201cputting it off until later,\u201d has finally begun to be repaid.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the payment is smaller than what I gave your big sister, but at least it is finally being made.<\/p>\n

It may be late, but better late than to keep using the excuse \u201cI lost my creative spark\u201d until the day you graduate from college! \ud83d\ude1c<\/p>\n

I don’t know what kind of man you will become one day, but I hope you will always keep your intelligence, your kindness, your curiosity, and your love for family.<\/p>\n

Grandma and Grandpa do not need you to become some extraordinary or famous person. We simply hope that you will grow into a successful, principled, and responsible man\u2014someone who knows who he is, and who never forgets where he came from.<\/p>\n

Y-Thanh of Grandpa, the day you were born in the middle of COVID, the whole world was anxious and separated. But for our family, it was one of the happiest days we had ever known.<\/p>\n

And perhaps that is what Grandpa most wants you to remember: even when life becomes uncertain and frightening, the arrival of a child can still bring hope and joy, and can make grown-ups believe in life all over again.<\/p>\n

Today Grandpa is writing for you, turning that old poem into a song, and working with friends to create a little video to preserve this story.<\/p>\n

Not to make up for what I created for H\u1ea1-Vy, but to give Y-Thanh a memory of his own\u2014a memory that carries your name, the laughter of your family, and the love of both sides of your grandparents.<\/p>\n

As for whether Grandpa has been \u201cfair\u201d or not, let us leave that judgment until you are old enough to decide for yourself. \ud83d\ude01<\/p>\n
