Our family already had two sons in the military. For them, my future was meant to follow a safer, more honorable path. But for me, it was never simply a career choice\u2014it was a dream, a calling, almost a matter of destiny.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">That dream took root when I was still a student, after immersing myself in The Life of a Pilot by Air Force writer To\u00e0n Phong Nguy\u1ec5n Xu\u00e2n Vinh. From those pages, the sky began to speak to me.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">When I was finally selected, I prayed\u2014truly prayed\u2014that I would become a fighter pilot, flying combat aircraft with the pride and fire I had imagined. But fate, as it often does, had its own design.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Though my flight performance in training ranked well above average, I did not receive the assignment I had hoped for. At the time, there was only one available track: transport aircraft. The largest and most modern among them, supplied by the United States, was the C-123K.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I even tried\u2014quietly\u2014to fail, hoping to remain for the next class rumored to include fighter training. But my instructors would not allow it. In the end, one of them chose the aircraft for me.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">And so I accepted\u2014not because my passion had faded, but because war leaves little room for personal preference.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">When the C-123K was later replaced by the C-130A\u2014the largest and most advanced transport aircraft in the South Vietnamese Air Force\u2014I was selected for transfer to one of its squadrons. It felt like a second chance, a renewed hope.<\/p>\n<p>But again, reality intervened.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Because the aircraft was so advanced and versatile, many senior pilots were reassigned to it first. I was told to wait my turn.<\/p>\n<p>Wait\u2014not for days, but indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In wartime, waiting is a heavy burden. Not because of ambition, but because I longed to fly, to sit in the cockpit, to take part in a war that was intensifying by the day.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In the end, I made a decision: I requested transfer to a combat transport unit flying the AC-119K\u2014a heavily armed aircraft designed for battlefield support against armored columns and massed ground forces. At that time, it was among the most effective weapons in our arsenal.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">That decision brought me into the heart of the war\u2014over the Central Highlands, over the fire-scorched lands of Military Region I. I flew missions over places whose names would later become etched in memory: \u0110\u1ea1i L\u1ed9c, Th\u01b0\u1eddng \u0110\u1ee9c, \u0110\u1ee9c D\u1ee5c in Qu\u1ea3ng Nam.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">And it was aboard this aircraft that I would fly the final combat mission of my life.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The night of April 28th into the early hours of April 29th, 1975.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">That night, I flew what would become my last mission\u2014though I did not yet know it.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">When I returned to the officers\u2019 quarters, the airbase was already under artillery attack. The explosions were no longer distant echoes\u2014they had come to our doorstep. The war was no longer somewhere out there. It had arrived.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Near 7 a.m., we witnessed the downing of Tinh Long 7.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Even now, more than half a century later, that image remains unforgotten.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">And yet, strangely, in the midst of it all, I was still calm\u2014perhaps not calm, but na\u00efve enough\u2014to go to the family quarters and buy rice and fish sauce. In my mind, I was preparing for hard days ahead for the three of us\u2014my two younger brothers, whom I had just brought into the base the day before.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">At the family compound, people were running in panic. Fear moved like a hot wind. I realized then that the situation had surpassed anything I could have imagined.<\/p>\n<p>I rushed back to my squadron.<\/p>\n<p>Chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Utter chaos.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">No command, no order\u2014only individuals searching for their own escape.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I returned to my quarters, loaded my two brothers onto my Lambretta, and we began searching for an aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>But it was almost too late.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Most operational planes had already departed. Some said pilots had taken their families to C\u00f4n S\u01a1n, Ph\u00fa Qu\u1ed1c\u2014names that now sounded like distant lifeboats.<\/p>\n<p>Still, we searched.<\/p>\n<p>Under intermittent shelling, we kept going.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Finally, we found an AC-119K that seemed operational. I climbed aboard to check its condition.<\/p>\n<p>For a brief moment\u2014hope.<\/p>\n<p>But when I climbed down\u2026<\/p>\n<p>My brothers were gone.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I shut down the engines and ran to find them. Within minutes\u2014before I could grasp what was happening\u2014other pilots had taken the aircraft and left.<\/p>\n<p>Just like that, hope vanished.<\/p>\n<p>A hollow feeling followed.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Then, suddenly, my brothers reappeared. They had tried to escape the base to return home, but the gates were sealed\u2014crowds, shouting, gunfire into the air, even shots fired at the ground to disperse them.<\/p>\n<p>They had no choice but to return.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">We stood there\u2014lost, stunned\u2014when suddenly a pickup truck sped past. Major P.V. \u0110i\u1ec7n leaned out and shouted:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThu\u1eadn! Come with me\u2014I need a co-pilot!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like drowning men grasping at air, we ran after him.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft we found was a C-130A.<\/p>\n<p>Its takeoff was nothing short of miraculous.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">We began from midway down the runway\u2014far too short to reach safe takeoff speed. As we pulled back, the aircraft shuddered violently, as though it might fall from the sky at any moment.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I remember the feeling clearly: a suffocating tension, life and death balanced on a thread.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">But the four engines\u2014half jet, half prop\u2014gradually lifted us.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">We headed toward V\u0169ng T\u00e0u, intending to reach Ph\u00fa Qu\u1ed1c or C\u00f4n S\u01a1n.
