Beyond painful memories, Fifty Years in Retrospect also records an extraordinary journey of resilience and renewal\u2014particularly of the Vietnamese community in the United States, and more broadly across the Vietnamese diaspora worldwide. From the earliest days of hardship in refugee camps, our community rebuilt life from nothing. Within just half a century, more than five million Vietnamese have formed a strong, vibrant, and contributing community.<\/p>\n

Today, Vietnamese Americans are present in every field\u2014education, science, medicine, technology, business, politics, and the arts. Across generations, our sons and daughters have become scientists, scholars, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, elected officials at both local and federal levels, and service members throughout the United States Armed Forces. Among them are seven distinguished generals, men and women alike. Most notably, in late September 2025, former Rear Admiral Hung Cao, a second-generation Vietnamese refugee, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Under Secretary of the Navy\u2014the highest civilian position beneath the Secretary of the Navy. On October 3, he was formally sworn into office. These achievements have brought honor not only to individuals, but to the Vietnamese people across the free world.<\/p>\n

These accomplishments stand as undeniable proof of the resilience, adaptability, and enduring spirit of the Vietnamese people. They remind us that the belief in freedom and democracy has never faded. From our second homelands, new generations have carried forward a tradition of learning, perseverance, and service\u2014preserving Vietnamese cultural identity while fully integrating into and contributing to the societies that welcomed us.<\/p>\n

Half a century has passed since the tragedy of April 1975\u2014a profound wound in our national history, and the beginning of an unprecedented exodus of millions of Vietnamese into exile. Fifty Years in Retrospect, published today by the Institute for Vietnamese History and Culture, brings together seventeen authors of different generations, backgrounds, and life experiences prior to 1975, writing from various states across the United States. Together, their voices form a bridge between memory and the present, between historical truth and our shared hopes for the future.<\/p>\n

This anthology is not merely a collection of memories. It is a tribute to those who came before us. It is a testament to the vitality of a people who refused to be broken.
