FAREWELL TO H\u00c0 QUAN PH\u00c1T<\/strong>

First of all, on behalf of the beloved comrades of K\u011053CT and the brotherhood of Class 4\/69, Air Force Officer Candidate School, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to Ph\u00e1t\u2019s family. We share in this immense loss of a human life. May peace soon return to those who loved Ph\u00e1t, and to all of us gathered here today.<\/p>\n

Distinguished guests, comrades, and friends,<\/p>\n

Today I stand here with a heavy heart to say farewell to a man whom I did not merely call a friend, but whom I regarded as a blood brother for more than two-thirds of my life.<\/p>\n

I met Ph\u00e1t when we were both still green boys, entering Class 4\/69 together at the Air Force Officer Candidate School. We were lined up by height, he was tall and lanky, I was no shorter, just a bit sturdier. He stood beside me in morning formation, and at night our bunks were close together. Even back then, when our hair was still black, his mouth was already restless, mischievous, irreverent, expertly teasing anyone within reach. He gave me the nickname \u201cThu\u1eadn n\u1eabu\u201d and laughed himself silly over it, though in truth he was the real n\u1eabu, pure and proper, being the son of a B\u00ecnh \u0110\u1ecbnh man, south of Qu\u1ea3ng Ng\u00e3i, my own homeland. In return, I bestowed upon him the name \u201cPh\u00e1t Mi\u00ean,\u201d for his unmatched talent in telling Cambodian tales.<\/p>\n

Those days at the military academy marked the beginning and almost the entirety of his life. His Mi\u00ean stories, delivered in that uncanny imitated accent, were irresistible. Not only during our military years, but long afterward through America, even until a few years ago until perhaps he ran out of stories, or they had simply grown too old to tell.<\/p>\n

I remember one time at the academy, while cleaning rifles, he pushed me to the brink. I nearly swung my rifle butt at him, chasing him around the barracks at the Quang Trung Training Center. And yet, in the end, he became the one closest to me. That was Ph\u00e1t – a mouth that stirred trouble, but a heart that was honest, upright, and boundlessly loyal.<\/p>\n

While studying foreign languages in preparation for overseas training, he fell in love with a beautiful girl he affectionately called \u201cD\u00ec Ch\u00edn.\u201d He told me he loved her, wanted to marry her. I teased him, asking why he kept calling the girl he wished to marry with a title \u201cAunt Ch\u00edn.\u201d He said that was just what his neighborhood friends called her. I became his strategist, helping him write love letters. When he passed the language exam and left for the U.S. first, he asked me to \u201ckeep your eyes over her\u201d so no one, myself included, would get any ideas. I didn\u2019t know how to guard anyone; I only followed her from afar now and then, reporting back to reassure him.<\/p>\n

A month later, I graduated and joined him in America. We lived together from one base to another. We circled through life side by side for years. He cooked; I washed dishes\u2014sometimes he even deliberately made extra mess just to give me more work.<\/p>\n

After returning home for a time, he finally married D\u00ec Ch\u00edn and asked me to serve as best man. For me, it was a great joy to see a brother build a future after years of war and fire.<\/p>\n

Then came 1975. The sky collapsed. Everyone scattered, each searching for a way to survive. His family escaped early. I fled on the very last C-130A. We were together through Utapao, Guam, Eglin, San Antonio, then the farms. In the end, fate brought us together again in Houston, our homes less than a mile apart. It seemed heaven never meant for us to be separated for long.<\/p>\n

In San Antonio, we shared a foster mother, a widow of an Air Force lieutenant colonel killed in the Korean War. She treated us Air Force students like her own children. Thanks to her, we had shelter and decent meals in a foreign land. Then came the days of doing manual labor, th\u1ee3 v\u1ecbn, knowing nothing, yet doing whatever was asked. We received our first paycheck ever of $46. Holding that check, I remembered the anger I felt earlier when an American official at the refugee camp had insulted him, offering him to fly spraying pesticides and relegating his wife to housecleaning for $500 a month. The humiliation burned. Now, holding that $46 checks, I thought to myself, \u201cI regret nothing. Poor, but clean. Hard, but with heads held high.\u201d<\/p>\n

Time passed. Refugee life carried us in different directions, his family moved from San Antonio to Iowa, then Tennessee while I was to Tulsa Oklahoma, then California. And yet, in a strange twist of fate, we found each other again in Houston, now older, backs bent, white hair but still together.<\/p>\n

Nearly sixty years. More than half a century. From two penniless, clueless boys in military schools and flight training\u2026 to fifty bruising years in exile\u2026 and still we had each other. That, truly, was destiny. And yet today, I must stand here to say farewell to Ph\u00e1t Mi\u00ean, Ph\u00e1t Volley, that B\u00ecnh \u0110\u1ecbnh rascal, to the brother who walked with me through war, displacement, hunger, rebuilding, and aging.<\/p>\n

Ph\u00e1t\u2026<\/p>\n

I am not yet used to a world without you. But I believe that somewhere, you are laughing, telling Mi\u00ean stories, teasing others as you once teased us. This time you left without asking me to keep watch over D\u00ec Ch\u00edn. Perhaps she now has children and grandchildren, all accomplished and successful, so you no longer need me. Still, I promise you, I will always look out for them whenever they need me.<\/p>\n

Today, as I bid you eternal farewell, I honor your friendship. Thank you for walking through my life as a true brother. Thank you for the hard years when we still had one another, bound by loyalty and affection. Thank you for being present in more than half of my life.
\nNow, I ask only ask you one thing, go in peace. Go lightly. And always watch over those you love.<\/p>\n
