\n<\/br><\/p>\n

December stands\u2014the year\u2019s last measured door,
\nThe New Year waits, half-seen beyond the gate.
\nThough you and I are here as we were before,
\nThe taste of spring has long since turned to late.<\/p>\n

For as our years accumulate their weight,
\nConvictions shift, eroded day by day;
\nTo wish for change is merely to debate\u2014
\nYouth does not turn back, nor find its way.<\/p>\n

This December, I force a poem to be born,
\nWith friends, to bid the fading autumn go,
\nTo greet the winter newly drawn\u2014
\nFor seasons come and leave; this much we know.
\nOnly our shoulders bow beneath their load,
\nLike withered leaves still clinging to the bough,
\nUnsure how long the branch will bear the code
\nOf holding on\u2026 as I am holding now.<\/p>\n

Autumn has not yet gone; the yellow leaf delays,
\nAs I would slow my step upon the bridge;
\nThe leaf knows not where winds may cast its days,
\nNor I\u2014poised at the edge of loss and gain and ridge.
\nI fear the time when flesh lies still in clay,
\nThe soul unmoored, unable to find home\u2014<\/p>\n

I greet December, thinking feeling\u2019s fled away,
\nYet cannot watch the hurried days pass numb.
\nThough front and back dissolve in equal night,
