Sweet Joy & Bitter Fruit<\/strong>
\n<\/br><\/p>\n

At dusk I sit in meditation (*), my face weighed down with gloom,
\nLife feels like withered yellow leaves, dried relics of their bloom.
\nMy mind drifts on like poets lost in search of fitting rhyme,
\nAt moments shaking my own head, bewildered by my time.<\/p>\n

Across from me my loving wife looks up and softly smiles,
\n\u201cIt\u2019s been so long,\u201d she says, \u201csince you spoke of flying miles.\u201d
\nHer eyes grow bright\u2014I praise her skill, her charm beyond compare,
\n\u201cAh yes,\u201d I laugh, \u201ctomorrow then\u2014I\u2019ll fly, my love, I swear.\u201d<\/p>\n

She opens up the computer, searches through the net,
\nEnrolls me once again where I had trained before\u2014and yet
\nShe smiles and says, \u201cYour luck is good, the flight school\u2019s free at dawn,
\nTomorrow morning still has time\u2014an empty slot goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joy floods the hollow of my heart, once vacant, bare, and still,
\nMy eager feet go hunting for the suit I used to fill.
\nI hold it now\u2014my throat grows tight, my breath begins to stall,
\nRemembering the day I left, the ache that numbed it all.<\/p>\n

I wear the flight suit once again, my spirit stirred and shaken,
\nA life once drawn across the skies abruptly reawakened.
\nThe trees know well that spring is gone, their leaves are dry and torn,
\nYet bitter tears still rise unbidden, sharp as hidden thorns.<\/p>\n

I wear the flight suit\u2014my insides twist, a tightening despair,
\nThe faces of my fallen friends, my comrades lost in air.
\nThe images of war return, of battles torn and bleak,
\nLike broken reels of trembling film, replaying as they speak.<\/p>\n

I smooth the suit, my heart goes numb, why does it still hold fast?
\nA lifetime nearly spent, yet bearing weight of all the past.
\nBefore too long, fall will fade and winter will draw near,
\nThe day I return home again
\nMay be no more than fear\u2014
\nA fleeting dream, a phantom hope,
\nAn illusion, thin and clear.<\/p>\n
