\n<\/br><\/p>\nThat line keeps echoing in my head as I sit here writing about him, thinking of the life-and-death days we once went through together, and feeling a sudden ache for those memories.<\/p>\n
He was my senior by class. From the time I returned to Vietnam and was assigned to a unit Flight Squadron 421, C.123K, under Lt. Col. Nguy\u1ec5n Qu\u1ebf S\u01a1n. I met him.<\/p>\n
Although from the day we knew each other until now we still call each other \u201cm\u00e0y tao mi t\u1edb,\u201d deep down I have always respected him. Beyond the respect due to rank and seniority under military discipline, he was also a very likable person, a man of few words, lots of smiles, and harmony with everyone in the squadron.<\/p>\n
He was skillful with his hands, had an aesthetic eye, enjoyed artistic decoration, and was very diligent, so he often caught the attention of superiors whenever the unit needed someone. Because of that, friends affectionately gave him the nickname \u201cThu\u1eadn the carpenter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not long after being in Squadron 421, we were transferred to the newly formed Squadron 425 under Lt. Col. Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ebf Th\u00e2n. (Because of logistical demands for the intense battlefields throughout South Vietnam, the C.123K force was expanded to three squadrons.)<\/p>\n
After the C.123K was dissolved to transition to the C.130A, the two of us were again selected to Squadron 435 under Lt. Col. L\u00e2m V\u0103n Phi\u1ebfu. Even so, the period that left the deepest mark between the two of us was our time in Squadron 425.<\/p>\n
\u201cDeeply marked,\u201d perhaps because that was when he began courting and falling in love, while I was still in love only with blue skies and white clouds.<\/p>\n
On the daily mission orders, only surnames and initials of flight personnel were listed. He was Thu\u1eadn N., and I was Thu\u1eadn T.<\/p>\n
One day, by chance, both of us entered the squadron office at the same time to check the Operations Order. He saw that his name was scheduled to fly the next day and that mine was not. He turned to me and said, \u201cHey Thu\u1eadn T, tomorrow I\u2019m supposed to go out with her for the first time, could you fly in my place?\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked at him in surprise, suddenly recalling a flying taboo often whispered about, \u201cFlying in someone else\u2019s place\u2026 easy way to end up on the altar.\u201d But seeing the pleading smile on his gentle face, I smiled back and nodded, saying, \u201cAlright, but don\u2019t be surprised if we get punished.\u201d He replied, \u201cThu\u1eadn N or Thu\u1eadn T. is still Thu\u1eadn, as long as someone flies the mission, it\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
And indeed, the next day when I flew, the aircraft commander asked in surprise if I had mistaken the schedule. I honestly told him the story, and immediately received\u2026 understanding.<\/p>\n
In truth, aside from V\u00f5 \u0110\u1eaft far away, in Saigon I was practically a charity case. Besides flying missions, standing combat duty, practicing martial arts and teaching them back to Air Wing personnel, and playing volleyball – though only as a reserve on the K\u011053CT team – I had nothing else to do, not to mention my constant love for flying. That very inclination was what made me leave my family, quit the lecture hall, and go straight into the Air Force.<\/p>\n
And that was not the last time he asked me to substitute for him, until the day he and his beloved pledged a hundred years together. On his wedding day, I was kindly invited to his home for the celebration. I did not attend the church ceremony, as I was an \u201coutsider to the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was my first time visiting his house. The house was beautifully arranged for the wedding. Especially the dance hall, it must have taken him enormous effort to design. There were stalactite-like ceilings with shimmering-colored lights, very romantic. The music was carefully selected, the sound lively but just right for a festive night. The guests were all young men and women, most of whom joined in the celebration. The music thumped on, and the dance floor was constantly full.<\/p>\n
As for me, true to my one-man-band, lonely-wolf nature, I sat alone in a corner, watching others move in rhythm on the dance floor, while my own feet twitched along unconsciously. While everyone was dancing, I happened to notice a young woman sitting alone at the far end of the room, also tapping her feet like me. I gathered my courage and walked over to invite her. She looked up in surprise and said, \u201cSorry, the music is almost over.\u201d And by the time she finished speaking when the music actually stopped. Embarrassed, I returned to my seat, feeling terribly awkward. After a while, I quietly took my leave without a word.<\/p>\n
Naturally, after the wedding, he would occasionally flash that pleading smile at me again, until we were both selected for the C.130A. There, because he was senior, he was chosen for training before me. He got to sit in the pilot\u2019s seat, while I still flew, but only carrying the mission map case, watching others fly while I stared at the sky and clouds\u2026 composing poems.<\/p>\n
This situation dragged on for several months, making my hands and feet restless. I longed to personally fly and land this most advanced transport aircraft at least once. That prolonged waiting weighed heavily on my heart.<\/p>\n
Just then, Squadron Tinh Long 821, C.119K, the most advanced combat transport aircraft of the VNAF at the time, had just arrived and needed more pilots. I heard it was equipped with four six-barrel miniguns and two six-barrel 20mm cannons, delivering maximum firepower and flying only night missions. I immediately went to Air Wing command to request a transfer, but was refused, with the promise that after finishing this training course I would be included in the next one.<\/p>\n
When the next course list came out and my name was not on it, I grew resentful and went back to command, determined to leave. They still refused, saying they needed me for martial arts training and the upcoming volleyball tournament. But my mind was made up, \u201cIf you don\u2019t let me go to Tinh Long, I\u2019ll request a transfer to the infantry!\u201d And that, He and I were separated.<\/p>\n
After some time at Tinh Long, I began to miss the places I had been on troop transport, paratroop drops, and resupply missions; I missed close friends, missed the massive advanced transport aircraft. Hearing rumors that the U.S. Air Force would transfer even more advanced C.130s, equipped with 105mm cannons for battlefield support, I wanted to return again. I asked my close friend, \u201cPh\u00e1t volleyball,\u201d the team favorite, to help request that Deputy Air Wing Commander Lt. Col. Nguy\u1ec5n H\u1eefu Th\u1ebf (who oversaw the team) allow me back to the C.130, but by then, it was too late.<\/p>\n
At the end of April 1975, chaos erupted suddenly. No one told anyone anything; each person could barely take care of himself. I was fortunate that Lt. Col. Phan V\u0169 \u0110i\u1ec7n, passing by the Military Aviation station and seeing me standing dazed in the road, pulled me along as co-pilot. We flew to Utapao, Thailand, seeking refuge in late morning, April 29, 1975.<\/p>\n
Upon arriving at the air station, I met him. He was sorrowful, his wife and children had been evacuated to C\u00f4n S\u01a1n during the night of April 28\u201329. He stayed behind with the squadron, but eventually had to flee as well, straight to Utapao. In those days, everyone was lost, unsure of what would happen.<\/p>\n
Everyone\u2019s heart was broken, tears falling as we watched the insignias of the VNAF and the yellow flag with three red stripes being painted over by U.S. and Thai forces, especially after hearing \u201cBig Minh\u201d announce surrender. That was it, the fate of the nation was sealed.<\/p>\n
I and two of my younger brothers, whom I was lucky to bring along, were taken to the Orote Point refugee camp on Guam for a few days, then transferred to Anderson temporary camp on a U.S. Air Force base, then straight to the refugee camp at Eglin AFB, Florida for another two weeks.<\/p>\n
On May 24, 1975, my foster mother sponsored me out of the camp.<\/p>\n
On May 25, I went to church with her family. On the morning of May 26, 1975, I followed a devout parishioner to work as a helper\u2026<\/p>\n
After quite a long time, I happened to meet him again. He and his family were also in San Antonio, working as carpenters with their sponsor family. Even so, both of us were consumed by worries about the present and future, so we did not keep in touch for a long time.<\/p>\n
After many ups and downs, in 1991 I moved my family to Houston. I learned that he had become a well-known construction contractor, handling large projects, working exclusively with Americans. I was truly happy for him. Once life stabilized, old friends began finding one another again, cherishing the joy of living with memories of a bygone era.<\/p>\n
At every gathering, he would find a way to retell old stories, never forgetting the one about me flying in his place. Those stories might have grown old to others, but they never seemed old in his heart\u2014and that moved me deeply.<\/p>\n
Now age has taught us that everything is like drifting clouds. He says only compassion and friendship endure. He has been retired for many years; his children are educated, accomplished, and established in society. Like most families here, the children have moved out, leaving their parents with a large but empty estate. He and his wife devote themselves to charitable work everywhere. They organize spiritual retreats at their private home for priests and nuns, gathering many of God\u2019s children. He uses his professional carpentry skills to serve God, building churches, houses not only for poor Vietnamese in Thailand and Cambodia, but also for impoverished people in distant underdeveloped countries. Besides that, husband and wife roaming the mountains and rivers. He says that thanks to traveling, his wife felt much batter for her asthma. <\/p>\n
I am truly happy for him and proud of him.<\/p>\n
One outstanding thing about him I have not yet mentioned is that he has been completely \u201cimmune\u201d to alcohol for decades, not even cigarettes. He drinks only a little coffee when enjoying time with friends. In general, he is immune to the \u201cfour gambling vices.\u201d He uses a smartphone, but only for directions and occasionally contacting children and friends. He asks his wife to check emails for him. He like to tells stories, jokes very well, but often just starts them and lets his wife continue. This fairy-like couple has countless fascinating experiences from their travels. Their stories sound like fairy tales. As with many times before, the recent spontaneous gathering was held at his house.<\/p>\n
Not many people, just over ten, but lively and festive. He learned that a friend, \u201cT\u01b0 ng\u01b0\u1eddi \u1edf,\u201d from the old C.130 squadron in Germany, was visiting California. (T\u01b0 was stuck in Vietnam after April 30, 1975, imprisoned for a long time, then escaped by boat, was rescued by a German ship, and settled in Germany ever since.) He asked within friends group to pitch in to bought an roundtrip ticket for T\u01b0 to fly to Houston for reunion. <\/p>\n
Although he could easily pay for it himself, hut he wanted the bond of brotherhood to be the reason T\u01b0 would agree. Specially to meet with \u201cB\u00e9 \u0110en,\u201d a unit mate gravely ill in the hospital for months.<\/p>\n
More precisely, he gave his friends the chance to express their friendship.<\/p>\n
Why are small unit gatherings in Houston always held at his house? Because among the group, no matter how successful anyone is, no one has a place as ideal as his estate. Being in the profession, his work led him to buy ten acres of land cheaply, not far from the city, but undeveloped at the time. On those ten acres was a natural pond nearly one acre wide. With his aesthetic eye and craftsmanship, he transformed it into a dreamlike lake. There is a curved Japanese bridge reflected in the water, several lakeside cottages fully equipped, fishing spots, small boats, a large floating barge that can carry dozens of people eating, drinking, and singing on cool autumn evenings. Both front and back yards can seat dozens comfortably, enjoying scenery and music like a fairyland.<\/p>\n
He also built a large swimming pool for summer gatherings. Flowers bloom year-round (if a season can\u2019t grow them, he buys them), greenery lush. He built a concrete walking path along the fence around all ten acres for exercise.<\/p>\n
From the road to the house is a long distance; he built a reinforced concrete driveway wide enough for two cars, lined with green trees and lighting for nights and holidays.<\/p>\n
His house. Naturally, self-designed and self-built. At first, he says, it was only meant to be spacious enough for a family of five children.<\/p>\n
But gradually it kept growing, often because he needed to find work for laborers during slow periods, or use surplus materials and manpower from other projects. The house grew wider, longer\u2026 and before anyone knew it, became a massive compound. But above all material needs, he and his wife have wonderful hearts. Yes, virtuous, generous, compassionate hearts.<\/p>\n
Always harmonious with everyone, always humble, smiling more than speaking. When he does speak, compassion shows in every story and every action toward all people. I am truly not boasting for him, nor do I need anything from him to flatter him or exaggerate. I thank life for giving me the chance to be his friend.<\/p>\n
A few representative stories he told among friends<\/p>\n
More than ten years ago, when his children were still little and always following their parents around, someone advised him to buy a vacation home right by the sandy shore on the eastern side of Galveston Beach, quite spacious, so the children could enjoy themselves during holidays or summer breaks, or so it could serve as a place of rest whenever work pressures became overwhelming.<\/p>\n
If it were me, perhaps I would have rented it out (Airbnb-style) to earn extra money for maintenance during times when the house stood empty\u2026 but for him, \u201cWhat if one day we need it and it isn\u2019t available, what then?\u201d When not in use, he simply closed it up and left it there; if close friends knew about the house and wanted to borrow it for a day or two, that was fine as well; and because of that, there were a few occasions when he let me be the owner for several days.<\/p>\n
However, after a devastating storm in 2009, the house was destroyed, suffering 100% damage. He did not bother to rebuild it, but instead left the land as it was, exposed to sun and dew, facing the blue sea. After fully retiring, both of them love traveling here and there. Especially as his wife\u2019s allergy symptoms grew increasingly severe, the two of them began going up to higher regions to change climates. During a trip to the mountainous area of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, his wife felt markedly healthier. While wandering around sightseeing, the two of them happened to notice a house listed for sale. He asked about it and learned that the price was very attractive, so he intended to buy it as a place for his wife to recuperate.<\/p>\n
While he was still unsure where the money would come from to buy this house, he received a message from a vacation-home business in Galveston wanting to purchase his abandoned plot of land at a price very profitable compared to what he had paid originally. And so, buyer and seller were well matched; he used that money to buy the house in Pagosa Springs and still had money left over to continue traveling.<\/p>\n
He knew that I very much enjoy traveling and sightseeing to seek inspiration and material for writing, so several times he invited my wife and me to go up there and visit with them. Of course, I very much wanted to go, but because daily work could not yet be set aside, we kept postponing and postponing again.<\/p>\n
On several occasions when we met, he confided in me, \u201cThe house is left empty so often, do you think we should turn this place into a party hall, rent it out for weddings, reunions, or gatherings, so we can earn some extra money for charitable work?\u201d I encouraged him, saying it was a wonderful idea. Everything was already in place: beautiful scenery, flowers, water, boats, lakeside houses, spacious rooms\u2026 it would only take a bit more renovation to be done. And yet\u2026 that thought continued to occupy his mind, though he still lacked the motivation to push it forward. Time passed on indifferently, and he and his wife continued to travel, and travel\u2026<\/p>\n
Until one day, they returned home. He received an invitation from the city to attend a meeting for residents in his neighborhood. This was not the first time.<\/p>\n
Neighborhood meetings occur quite often whenever the city or the community needs to announce or discuss matters with residents, such as elections for the neighborhood board, improper trash disposal, disturbances caused by certain individuals, speeding cars in the neighborhood, residents neglecting regular lawn maintenance, and so on.<\/p>\n
Usually, he did not attend, being busy with business. That day he was free and decided to go and see what it was about. The city announced plans to construct a major road passing through his neighborhood. Any residential lots or houses located on the city\u2019s map would be bought back. Looking at the map, he saw that the road would cut through a portion of his land, including the creek that marked his property boundary. He stated that the creek belonged to him, not public property. The city agreed to compensate him but said they would review the matter and notify him later. When he received notice from the city offering compensation of forty thousand dollars, he responded that the creek lay very close to the concrete driveway leading into his home, a two-way road lined with trees and decorated with lights and ornaments; the portion to be taken included the creek and part of the cement road, which would destroy the aesthetic of the gently curved driveway he had carefully designed. He would have to spend time and money rebuilding the road and replanting trees. The city replied that they would review it again and notify him.<\/p>\n
The couple then set off traveling once more. They went as far as Costa Rica, staying at a very beautiful resort. Every day they wandered around sightseeing, observing local life, leisurely like a fairy couple. Both of them greatly loved the scenery, climate, and people there, and so they considered buying land to build a small house for two hearts\u2026 old, yet still warm, but found no leads. His wife searched online and found that land prices were beyond their means. Toward the last days of their trip, they noticed the resort owner appearing to chat with guests.<\/p>\n
He was a middle-aged man, casually dressed, cheerful, and very friendly. On impulse, he casually asked, \u201cYou are a wealthy person and have lived here a long time, do you know of anyone who has a piece of land or a small house to sell at a reasonable price?\u201d They were utterly surprised by his affirmative answer. After making a phone call to someone, the man asked if they would like to go with him to see it. After viewing the property, the owner of the house, whom they immediately took a liking to, said they were willing to sell for $150,000.<\/p>\n
Knowing that this was already quite cheap compared to what they had found online, the couple still negotiated down to a final figure both sides agreed upon, \u201ca fair sale, a fair purchase\u201d, of $137,000. After buying the house, the resort owner and he became close friends.<\/p>\n
While chatting and enjoying time with this new friend, he told him that after completing renovations, aside from the time his family would use the house, he would ask him to manage tourist rentals. The income earned, after necessary expenses, would be entirely devoted to charitable work, helping people, helping the poor in underdeveloped countries. The new friend was extremely astonished by this unexpected proposal. He said that in his life, he had never encountered someone with such generosity and compassion.<\/p>\n
Upon returning home, he received a letter from the city. He hurriedly opened it to read\u2026 Before the astonished eyes of the couple, the city agreed to compensate him with a total amount of exactly $137,000!<\/p>\n
They itemized the compensation: relocation of the driveway area, counting every tree on both sides of the road and within the purchased land, including electrical outlets installed along the road, including strings of lights hung on trees along the driveway, calculating all reconstruction labor costs, meaning they were extremely meticulous, detail by detail, leading to the total compensation amount. He considered it a miracle! A providential act of God, abundantly rewarding him and helping him fulfill the deepest wishes of his heart.<\/p>\n
I too must acknowledge it as a miracle. He said that for him, everything he has today is granted by the grace of God, including the survival of his family through life-and-death upheavals. His life has always contained extraordinary encounters, including meeting his wife; after more than forty-seven seasons of love have passed, their love and marital happiness remain divine arrangements. He believes absolutely in the miracles bestowed upon his family by Heaven.<\/p>\n
At the recent gathering of friends, he had the chance to show me the yellow boundary line marked by the city from front to back, along the length of the ten-acre property. The yellow line cuts only a very small portion of his driveway; he lost the creek, but the city informed him that it would preserve the creek, only making it safer and more beautiful, without erecting barriers.<\/p>\n
In short, everything would remain as it was after construction of the new road. One need only understand that from the yellow line to the creek is now city property.<\/p>\n
Hearing about land compensation cases in the United States, I couldn\u2019t help but feel a pang of sorrow as I thought of the dispossessed people in my own Vietnam; suddenly, my eyes welled up with tears.<\/strong><\/p>\nKingwood, October 2019<\/em>
